If you are a keen photographer, then a pocket digital camera is as necessary as oxygen, to have the ability to shoot pictures whenever and wherever you choose, without sacrificing many of the features that make shooting with a digital camera so exciting.
The phrase, pocket digital camera, is used to denote any small digital camera, and as many are now so small that they could easily fit into the palm of your hand, the expression now covers a vast array of models, which all have different features and specifications.
Choose Wisely
Selecting a pocket digital camera will be mainly governed by the type of photography you intend doing, obviously due to their size things like interchangeable lenses are not available, so long range zoom shooting isn't really an option, and likewise for shooting in dark situations, the range of their Flash is limited,

Scene Mode
Make sure you select a camera with Scene Mode, now different cameras have different scenes or names, but some if the frequent ones are: Snow, Foliage, Night, Party, Sport, Kids & Pets, Skin, Portrait, Landscape, Beach etc, so when you select a scene that matches your shooting you know that the camera settings are the best for the situation.
White Balance
A digital camera needs all the colors of the spectrum to give you the best results, so under false lights like fluorescent lighting you will end up with a color-cast to the picture unless you have a white-balance control on your camera which compensates for the light.
Adjustable Focus Points
Yo want to be able to adjust how the camera focusses, sometimes the object you want to photograph does not take up much space in the frame so the camera takes an average light reading on the frame and adjusts accordingly, making the small object quite dark (on a bright background).
If you could focus specifically on the object and take the light reading there, then the object would look good in the picture.
Zoom
Zoom allows you to get close to distant objects, try to select a camera with high optical zoom, as this gives better results. Some cameras use electronics to magnify the image - Digital Zoom, but the results are never as good.
Auto / Manual Mode
If you want to trust the camera to take every shot then setting the camera to Auto is the way to go, however if you want to control what you get, good or bad, then try experimenting with the camera in manual.
Viewfinder
Try to get a pocket digital camera with a large viewfinder, and one you can see in sunlight, as you will use this to both frame your shot and view the result after shooting, some cameras will allow you to magnify the shot image to check the details.
